Hello Patricia, By 1955 I had graduated from PSTC and completed two years in the army. Then I moved to Minnesota where I taught for over 30 years. I retired in '88. I remember Roma (DuBrey) Noel very well. She was my 4H advisor and a good friend of my sister, Valeda. Noel's store was a very important place in our little community. Several years ago I was in Chazy Lake and stopped to visit with Gerald. He showed me an old photo of the "old" Sullivan King home which later was bought by Frank and his wife. So, that house was built and first occupied by my great-grandfather and his family. I took a picture of the picture and still have it. I knew all of the DuBreys well. Victor was my best friend in elementary school, but I also knew Viola, Jay, Francis, and Ernest. I remember when the Chazy Lake School had 8 grades with one teacher. I, also, had Aunt Delia as my last elementary teacher.

I attended the school in Chazy lake from 1955 thru1960. Mrs Delia King was my teacher. There were 4 gades in one room. I believe we were the last one-room school in NY. My love for learning began there under Mrs Kiing's expert tutelage. As a teacher now I can't imagine her work load 4 grades- all subjects and never a cross word. She was great friends with my mother, Roma. I used to spend an occaisonal evening at her house. The King's were all honorary Aunts and Uncles--If you need geneology on the DuBrey family contact Patricia DuBrey(Daniel) Her daughter Pam researched back to Canada & France. Cheryl Is this you? Duh--I remember you "babysitting" for me and letting me watch "forbidden fruit"--- "The Adventures of Dobie Gillis" How guilty I felt!

About 1950 I was browsing the library at PSTC which I was attending at that time. There I ran across a small book or pamphlet that dealt with fishing in Chazy Lake.
This was put out by the NYS Fisheries Department. It concerned the demise of frostfish (round whitefish) in the lake. The disappearance of the fish occurred about the time of the construction and shoreline flooding of the concrete dam. Several unsuccessful attempts were made by the state to reintroduce this fish. They determined that the fish died as the result of a gill disease. I spent a quarter of a century fishing that lake and never saw one of my dad's favorite fish, the frostfish. For the most part these fish were caught by netting at about the time of the first fall frost, hence the name.

I am one of Valeda (King) LaDuke's grandchildren. My cousin forwarded this web site to me. I am not sure what information or pictures my mother or I may have to contribute.....but tell us what you need and I will see what I can find out.

Good to hear from you Joe. We'll be posting a lot about the Sullivan King family and what is known o Della LaCroix, which isn't that much right now. But she is very much a part of our research. I think that Della is in the family picture which appears on Old Sullivan's page. My guess is that she is the young girl who is sitting on the rock wall to our left as we face the picture. This is just a guess. Don and I are working to date the picture. Richard took the picture that is here by photographing the original which was in a frame at the house in Chazy Lake which had belonged to Old Sullivan and which we knew as kids as Noel's store.

The picture will have to be dated approximately by using dress and hair styles and by making a guess about the age of the kids. My current guess is about 189x. :) Time will give a better guess, but unless a dated copy shows up we'll never know.

Hi All. My Grandmother, "Della Lacroix, King, Gagne" was adopted by Sullivan & Mary when she was I believe 4 years old, around 1889. I have been told that Della's mother was Helen (ellen) Hamlin, who was a daughter of Charles & MArgaret Gebo. She had a sister, Delvee who ended up who knows where. Della, married Eli Gagne, from Redford and she died 3/8/1960.

In the post from Dick King above, Bill Kowalowski is mentioned. Bill married my Aunt, Anna Yasment of Lyon Mountain, and they moved to Silver Bay, Minn. Both have since passed. I remember Anna & Bill very well.

I would appreciate any info that any would have about Della, her sister, and the Sullivan King family.

Now it seems that the frostfish and the shad might be one and the same. I'll have to do some checking.
